I simply love the range on this Tamron 70-300 VC lens. This lens has been used so many times in my Canon EOS 30D DSLR camera for taking macro pictures. In addition, you can also use this lens to take photographs of patterns and textures. The ergonomics and build quality on this lens is quite good in my opinion. However, if you are using this lens to shoot on an overcast day, the lens will have a hard time focusing. I shot a white subject against a dark background with this lens and this lens failed to perform. Maybe I am not a good photographer and I should have checked the camera manual on this lens before testing this lens and writing this full review. Although many people find this lens heavy, I found this lens to be light for my taste. If you enjoy shooting occasional telephoto as well as macro photography, then this lens is for you.

As an alternative, you might also take a look at the Tamron 17-50 VC. The price and the new optical design are what attracted me to buy this lens. The ergonomic on this lens is very good. This lens is much sturdier compared to the older version. I found this lens to be light despite all the complaints out there of this lens being heavy. The VC mechanism on this lens really helps me in keeping this lens steady at all times. I do not have to worry about carrying a tripod with me all the time. You can switch to manual focusing when you find yourself in low light situation to prevent focus hunting. This lens will be good enough if you want to shoot occasional macro or telephoto. The only minor complaint is the price of this lens. This newer version costs almost twice as expensive as the earlier version. You should really look at this lens if you need the telephoto range and cheap price.
